Dear Parents:

The purpose of the Sea Scout program is to build character in each of its scouts. Each year we schedule a variety of activities to ensure your scout has an active and constructive experience. Your Sea Scout has a busy and exciting year ahead. Enclosed is a calendar of these activities for the current year. regular meetings are every Wednesday evening a 7:00 P.M. Asterisked events are required as they are fundraisers, competition, or service events. Overnight cruises are usually $10 per weekend with the scouts responsible for their own first meal. Long cruise costs are $15 per day.

There will be frequent opportunity for sailing days at Spring Lake, San Pablo and San Francisco Bays as the crew decides its training schedule. Also, we request one workday per month; this is usually spent in boat and equipment maintenance and is necessary in teaching the scouts responsibility for their possessions.

Your scout has been issued a T-shirt, and dungaree with belt and hat. A dress blue uniform will be issued when he/she reaches the rank of Apprentice; this uniform consists of a jumper, pants or skirt, scarf, cover, and perhaps shoes. When your scout becomes a Junior Officer (age 18) or leaves the unit, we require these materials be returned for use by another scout. Obviously, the cost of these materials is much larger than the cost of registration. Part of the goal in character building is to encourage scouts to earn part of their own way; that is why all fund raising events are required. We also request a $25 donation per family per month.

In addition to personal program costs, the unit raises funds for the maintenance of the boats and equipment. Our sponsor, Friends of Orion, also holds two fund raising events each year, one in May and one in July. We request each parent help with both events.

Scouting is a family oriented program, and we encourage you to join us. We hope to see you at several of our events, committee meetings, and regular Wednesday night meetings. Should you have any questions, please contact us immediately. Thank you for your support.

Yours in Scouting,
