Essay Grades

A / B / C

Each essay receives three grades; they carry equal weight.

The first grade (A) indicates the skill with which the student addresses the specific writing style assigned. It includes thoroughness, appropriate length, and inclusion of examples. A good paper includes a consistent tone and generates interest in the reader.

The second grade (B) indicates the skill with which the student uses vocabulary and paragraph organization. A good paper "hangs together" and displays a distinct writing style.

The third grade (C) indicates the skill with which the student uses grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Further explanation for specific grades are listed in the Windsor Unified School Rubrics.

Essays done over a period of time require at least one and usually two rough drafts with corrections shown in an alternate color of ink or pencil. Final drafts are in dark blue or black ink or typed. Essays composed on computer must also have printed rough drafts with corrections. All drafts and pre-write organization papers are to be stapled to the back of the final essay draft.

Quick-write essays, essays done in one 45 minute class period, may be in pencil, dark blue or black ink, or typed. A rough draft is not expected, but corrections may be made neatly on the draft; there is no penalty for corrections made neatly. All pre-write organization papers are to be stapled to the back of the essay.
