Homework Helps 2002-3 - Week 11 -
November 4-8, 2002READING: Read a minimum of 20 minutes each night including weekends. Read a book of your choice approved by your teacher; due November 4, 2002.Book report due 11/12. Read House on Mango Street; each chapter is to be accompanied by a thumbnail sketch and one sentence about it.
VOCABULARY AND SPELLING:
Periods 1-2. Choose words from the book you are currently reading. Define them according to the context of your book, and copy the sentence in which it appears. Prepare for a spelling test Thursday. For a grade of "C" the standard is 10 words written correctly; "B" is 13 words; "A" 15 words. Completed homework is half the grade.
Periods 4-5: Unit 7 due Friday 10/12/01. There will be a test 10/12. Basic: communication, announcer, commentary, accent, colleague, apparent, allude, aggressive, immense, illusion, collaborate, appliance, collision, accessory, immaculate, accumulate, allegiance, aggravate, collapse, illuminate. Review: Commercial, acceptable, alliance, appropriate, illegal. Challenge: irrelevant, corroborate, commemorate, alliteration, commiserate. Do: 48-51 (on 51 do not do Write a News Bulletin), and 53.
JUDICIAL PACKET: What happens when the judicial system does not do its job? Test 11/5.
EXPOSITORY ESSAY: "Where in Animal Farm could the animals have taken action to retain their freedom?" Consider the possible effects of the animals' actions at different points in the story. Then choose the one point at which the animals had given up so much that their freedom was forever and irrevocably gone. Final draft due 11/8/02.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: Each eighth grade student at Windsor Middle School is required to do 5 hours of community service as a part of the social studies curriculum. It is due with a report the second week of January 2003.
BOOK REPORT: You have read a book of your choice. Choose a project to do about that book and present it to the class. Directions are on a separate sheet of paper. Due 11/14/02.
