Homework Helps 2002-3 - Week 15 –
December 15, 2002READING: Read a minimum of 20 minutes each night including weekends. Read Light in the Forest; each chapter is to be accompanied by response journal or double entry journal. Due 12/18/02.
VOCABULARY AND SPELLING:
Periods 1-2. Choose words from the book you are currently reading. Define them according to the context of your book, and copy the sentence in which it appears. Prepare for a spelling test Friday. For a grade of "C" the standard is 10 words written correctly; "B" is 13 words; "A" 15 words. Completed homework is half the grade.
Periods 4-5: Unit 10 due Friday 12/6/02. There will be a test 12/6. Basic: coyote, mesa, savanna, adobe, pueblo, stampede, lariat, bronco, barbecue, tornado, indigo, jaguar, mosquito, sierra, avocado, alfalfa, cafeteria, mascara, pimento, armada. Review: cargo, hammock, chocolate, vanilla, cocoa. Challenge: bravado, renegade, incommunicado, flotilla, aficionado Do: pp. 66, 67, 68, 69(omit Write a Descriptive Paragraph), 71. Sort the basic words into categories, also. Completed homework is half the grade.
MANDALA: Make a mandala for Esperanza. Due 12/05/02.
MAP PROJECT: Begin this in class; finish at home. Due 12/20. Turn it in early if possible.
EXPOSITORY ESSAY: The essay question for House on Mango Street, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Never Forget is, "What personal characteristics help someone cope with hardship?" Second draft due 12/10/02.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: Each eighth grade student at Windsor Middle School is required to do 5 hours of community service as a part of the social studies curriculum. It is due with a report January 9, 2003.
MIND MAPS: An excellent reference for studying for a test from a text. Samples available on the internet.
