READING: Read a minimum of 20 minutes each night including weekends. Read a book of your choice and keep a reading log.

VOCABULARY AND SPELLING: There will be no vocabulary and spelling this week.

POETRY PROJECT:  Due April 7.  Choose one poem to present in class.  Memorize one poem to present in class after spring break.

MIRACLE WORKER ESSAY:  Choose the essay topic.  Second draft due April 9, 2009.
Choose one topic:
    
1. What is the parallel between Annie from the North and Helen from the South in relation to the historical build to the American Civil War?
    
2. What are the major symbols in the Miracle Worker? Discuss, perhaps, water, keys, locked doors, the North vs. South philosophies, the Battle of Vicksburg, the words from the Perkins report on Laura Bridgeman, or Annie’s flashbacks to her brother’s words, the parallel between the asylum and Helen’s world before she leaned language.
    
3. Discuss the line, "The more I think, the more certain I am that obedience is the gateway through which knowledge enters the mind of the child." Is this true in today’s education world? Perhaps include the later quote, "I taught her ‘no’. . . . I wanted to teach her ‘yes’."
    
4. Why are Helen Keller’s later accomplishments so well known today; why is she considered such a heroine today.
